In California a bat can't be used for self defense. If you have it in your home for self defense and it's found you'll be charged for having an illegal baton.

They are difficult to use in a tight hallway, and you can not carry them around town very easily, but they do give you more reach then most melee weapons people use these days, and no one wants to get a bat upside the head.
