Been around vicious dogs, vicious humans etc… but my wifes parents raise Scotch Highland Cattle – nothing else gave me the same uneasy sense of danger as those things. They are so unpredictably aggressive – totally docile most of the time, but then every once in a while a meat-tank decides its time to go.
You know what made me be a good fighter as a kid? I played a brass instrument in a marching band (wind and breath power), I climbed trees a lot living next to woods (arm strength and fearlessness), and I built a small log cabin with a small hand axe (fist, arm and shoulder power), I delivered newspapers on a bicycle (leg strength and stamina), and I took a little bit of wrestling in Jr High as an elective (technique). Never would have guessed that all of these disparate things would have made me a good fighter as a kid..
My first instructor for Taekwondo was a Former Republic of Korea army officer. He was totally ripped at age 51 and extremely serious about what he did. His training consisted of hours of doing repetitious Basics over and over and over again. He used to emphasize weights and being physically fit. During one class he struck me in the face causing an enormous amount of blood to discolor my uniform from white to red. Knowing what he was like, I did not flinch nor say a word but carried on. The other people in my class looked on in horror thinking that they were next in line to be struck. After about an hour my teacher came over and said what happened? I said well Master Chang, you punched me in the face. He said me? No I don't think I did that. Then he said but you didn't say a word. I said no that's fine. His brother was of an even higher rank and wood drill us even longer hours. That was the kind of training that did me the most good and gave me the most physical fitness and abilities.
I am not a master of any certain kind of art. I have trained in multiple gyms and under multiple instructors and in many styles. I have taken pieces from multiple arts and picked what works for me and what actually works in a defense setting. Learn multiple things and make sure it works on the street!
Thank you for the words on "real self-defense". Along those lines, diet is even more important than physical fitness for real self-defense — defending against heart disease, cancer, diabetes… Specifically, humans are designed to eat mostly fresh, raw, (ideally) organic fruits and certain vegetables. Avoid all processed foods, meat, dairy, and grains. Most of us are destroying our own bodies from the inside out by eating "foods" we're not able process without acid buildup. If you must eat meat, you must learn how to fast.
We need to move and sweat to move lymph, help eliminate toxic waste, and ultimately stay healthy. (If your armpits stink without deodorant, you're not there yet.) In that sense, yoga is a better real self-defense than Krav Maga, as it moves lymph without lactic acid buildup. Even Tai Chi is better. And stop smoking, wear your seatbelt, & hug your mom. Without her, you wouldn't exist.
Speaking of posturing. Any advice on how to fix a bad posture from years of not training and a desk job? Sloped neck and back, excess curvature in the lower back and a forward tilted pelvis.
If you want to be able to protect yourself is good idea to combine combat sports p.e mma,bixing3 mt,bjj, etc with martial arts p.e fma,ju jutsu, silat and self defence system p.e kappap,km,systema, defendo. Some of them are sport and arts like bjj,mt,sambo. All the above can help ypu built strengh, spirit and learn techniques to survive an attack but the mos timportant is to learn how to manage the distance, strike bareknuckle and throw or slam people to ground. In self defence situation stand up grappling is thd most useful thing and all art from wing chun to km include it, is ez to use a stsnding submission to a non trained fighter and is more safe for you. Of course you need to know ground and to be ready because everything can happen in the street and there is no ref, learn as many arts you can as best you can and adapted them in your fighting style. I agree with you 100%
Martial Arts for Self Defense? That's like a zen riddle. You're learning, training and preparing yourself for a situation that may never happen, not to mention one that you would do better without. Might as well just train hard to look good and feel good – it's a more realistic goal than beating up someone who may or may not ever try to jump you.
Love how he double downed on the cow bit.

A wise man once said "Ramsey Dewey is a wise man" .
