Is 10mm a Viable Self-Defense Caliber?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqwoJmxbGg0 With the recent addition of 10mm to our ballistic gel test project, we’re now looking at the bigger question of whether it’s a good choice for self-defense. Awesome, I’ve actually been looking for something like this.

Alexander Guzman says:

I love that if you look carefully at the data presented almost all the 10mm ammo tested is just the company's 40se loading in a 10mm case. Then at the bottom you can see the two actual 10mm loads from Sig and Speer have what is consider over penettation here, because the rounds are actually way more powerful. That is what people who want 10mm actually want to see tests on. We all know the rest of these cartridges will perform the same as 10mm it part of the flexibility when owning a 10mm. I think it's a grave misuse of our time to talk about the value of 10mm for carry if the majority of your tests use only the 40sw loadings.

Dale Johnson says:

To the 10mm vs grizzly the 10mm will win, a lot of hunting guides in Alaska use 10mm hand guns for back up weapons when they’re not using big boy guns like 45/70 etc.

AllAhabNoMoby says:

Well thought out presentation. Do you consider barrier penetration a reasonable criterion? I imagine the 10mm would excel at that (relatively speaking). I own a Glock 20, do not carry it though. But the 10mm is my favorite handgun caliber. Am considering a Glock 29 for CC. The .40 S&W is a formidable SD round, by all accounts statistically more effective than 9mm. Would a 10mm be even better, using the hotter munition types? Handling recoil under rapid fire is not a problem for me.

TALKED WAAAAYYY TOO FAST IN THIS VIDEO. Previous vid pace have been much better.

Prince of Pickles says:

10 mm is great for bears or any big animal threat..

C Kim says:

Caliber debates are like Democrats-Way to Emotional- Less important when it's a Head Shot!

MrByaeger says:

I have a different take on this maybe, just going off the term "viable". To me that means if I I shoot somebody with a 10mm will it stop or kill them. Not whether its a large or small or easy to handle gun. Just will it work if I need it to. It may not be the best or worst, but will it do the job. I personally don't own one but it sure seems like it would

Alejandro Flores-Samaniego says:

I pack 10mm in the woods/hunting for those man eaters. As a sidearm

Stefano Dogg says:

You are a complete fool who apparently never even heard of LeHigh or Underwood. Recuse yourself

Zechnar Ramadon says:

good lord man, the 10mm is one of the best self-defense calibers there is! That includes revolvers that you want to throw in! With full house loads it is the equal to the 41 magnum from old school revolvers and it holds 15 rounds in the glock 20. Buy hot defensive ammo and train with it, that is all there is to it. This caliber will get it done. Use hard cast loads from buffalo bore, or corbon and you have a bear stopper. You also have the glock 29 if you want a small one for carry.

Bitter Clinger says:

Lol if you're going to shoot at a bear with a 10mm, let me get a head start on running before you fire please…. Don't step to a bear with anything that size unless you're positive you can put one through it's eye.

rogue109 says:

My "woods gun" is a Glock Model 20 loaded with Lehigh Defense 140 grain rounds running at 1500 fps. Lets see the penetration on that one please? And yeah, I care about penetration because it's my hiking/woods gun.

mark bennett says:

Another reason to carry 10 mm, Lehigh Xtreme penetrator, & fort Scott, PENETRATE BODY ARMOR !! Level IIIA may as well be butter ! BAD GUY WITH VEST HAS NO CHANCE ! ( mind behind target)

Fawthur says:

When the best 10mm carry gun is still the S&W 1076 (imo), then we got a big hole to fill in the market. I personally would want a German-made SIG Sauer with non of the "gimmicks in exchange for quality" thing that SIG USA is notorious for.

Fawthur says:

Basically it goes like this.

Hot 10mm loads = good

Weaker 10mm loads = just .40

Richard says:

If I’m honest, 10mm is unnecessary for self defense against 2 legged critters. I don’t think there is a measurable performance difference to justify a larger pistol with more felt recoil than a .40 S&W or even a 9mm with a good load (like my personal favorite Federal HST 150gr). That said, it’s hard (but not impossible) to find a semi auto caliber better suited for self defense against four legged critters.

departed402 says:

For hardcore 10mm fans, the FBI ballistics standard is not the goal, the desire is to exceed it. We seek out boutique ammo manufacturers such as Underwood and Buffalo Bore that are willing to produce original "full house" loads. Any 10mm loading with a muzzle energy of less than 700 ft-lbs is often scoffed at.

Sir Chuckles says:

One reason I genuinely love this channel is on full display in this video:
"I am not qualified to tell you that."
"I don't know."

The ability to admit when you don't know something, especially in a very…macho… subject like guns, is so contrary to many info channels I have to call it out in praise.

b camp says:

10mm is so much more expensive compared to other more standard rounds, I can't see justifying this when it's only marginally more effective than 9mm or 45

Cory Brown says:

Love ur vids. Good stuff

J. Robert Bragg says:

The .40 S&W is truly a competent and viable self-defense caliber. I still love my S&W 1006 chambered in 10mm, however, the .40 S&W is my “go-to” Caliber.

Many local departments in my area refused to jump on the 9mm bandwagon, and kept their .40 S&W caliber and handguns.
