How to Defend against Kicks – Self Defense Tips

Join Code Red Defense and receive a self defense video: โ–บ https://www.codereddefense.com/newsletter In this video we look at how to defend against kicks. This is an important element of self-defense that needs to be addressed. There are many different opinions on how to defend against kicks in the martial arts community. Some think that it’s best to grab the leg of your opponent to catch him off guard, while others say it’s preferable to step away to avoid getting hit. Some other martial arts systems, mention that it’s best to block the incoming kicks with the shins. We personally prefer to step back to avoid the kick and then come back in quickly with strikes against your attacker to incapacitate him. An alternate option is to roll with the kick, by absorbing it with the back of your upper leg. You can also absorb it with your body and try to catch the leg if it’s a high kick. If you see the kick coming, you can intercept it by throwing one of your own kicks into your opponent’s leg to block it and stop him from kicking you. You can watch the clip to see a detailed demonstration on how to defend against kicks. We hope that you enjoyed these self defense tips. What about blocking the kick using the hands and/or arms? That'd be my first instinct, but do you not recommend that?

You pointed out the yanking part. That's my favorite one. When I do it in terms of street fighting, once my opponent in down, I just strike into the face. What other suggestions would you give for yanking?

When 'checking' as they do in Muay Thai, you aim for the thick, top third of your shin to make contact with the thin lower part of their shin. If done correctly, it is not a battle of who has the tougher shins, it will hurt like a motherfucker for them, and be more than tolerable for you. Also, when catching kicks, best step with it if you'd like to avoid broken ribs as well as looping your arm in a high arc instead of just dropping down to catch it, they might throw high and you will get knocked out cold dropping your arm down like that.
